Lady in Red

For today’s look we’re seeing red! One of the most dramatic and popular color choices, it can sometimes be difficult to build an entire look around the desire to use a pop of red. That’s what we’re here to help with! So, you want a deep red lip, do you? When we think of red lips, we think of the classic, glamorous, can’t-go-wrong combination of a dramatic cat eye and a deep red lip. Here’s our favorite way to build a look around a red lip. You’ll leave them all wondering just who that ‘lady in red’ is.

Eyes: Give the illusion of fuller, longer, dramatic lashes with the flick of a cat eye. We advise for a straighter wing than a curved one, for ultimate drama and sophistication. You don’t even need eye shadow, you can simply stick with a black cat eye liner over a primed eye, but if you want to go that route we’d suggest sticking to neutrals, to not detract from the bright color of your lipstick or the sharpness of your wing. Too many colors might be overpowering and, well, just look like ‘too much’. We like our drama in doses – sometimes a few pops of drama can be far more striking!

Face: Contouring will definitely heighten this look if you want to bump it up a notch, but we think the red lip speaks for itself, too, so this part is optional. Contouring of course can make your face appear more angular and give a more structured, dramatic look. You can also highlight, but we recommend sticking to only the very top of the apples of your cheeks, as you don’t want to overpower the rest of the look.

Lips: It’s simultaneously really easy and really hard to mess up a red lip. As long as the rest of your look is cohesive, you really can’t go wrong — BUT, make sure your application is impeccable, because with a deep color like this it can become really apparent when you’ve traced outside the natural lines of your lips, or you’ve smudged. We say go for that true, unmistakable, brick red to really get the wow factor from this look. Try our liquid matte in Ready?, or a matte like Retro Red or Scarlet.

But the look doesn’t have to stop there – add the finishing touches by painting your nails red with My Old Flame or Film Noir – we think those names perfectly resonate with this look, don’t you agree? You’ll evoke images of classic old hollywood glam, down to the very last details!
